The long-idle escalator at Chiang Mai’s Warorot Market has been brought back to life, thrilling locals and vendors after decades of inactivity. Known locally as Kad Luang, the market’s only escalator began moving last week for the first time in over 50 years. This restoration comes after structural and electrical upgrades by the market management, sparking excitement among shoppers and traders.

Installed decades ago as a modern addition to the market, the escalator had previously stalled due to high costs and maintenance issues, becoming a static landmark. After the recent refurbishment, news of its revival quickly spread on social media, drawing crowds curious to experience the once-idle feature. The escalator originally linked the ground and second floors, making it one of the first in northern Thailand, and is now functional again.

Chiang Mai Governor Thossapon Phuan-udom visited to personally test the escalator, using the visit to highlight a government co-payment program. He lauded the repair as both a practical enhancement and a homage to the city’s history, stating, “Kad Luang has always been at the heart of Chiang Mai’s economy. Restoring the escalator adds convenience and charm.”

Many long-time vendors expressed their joy, with Grandma New, an 80-year-old shop owner, reminiscing about the escalator's long dormancy since her youth. Souvenir vendor Nuch commented that the upgrade will particularly assist elderly customers who find stairs challenging, adding a layer of accessibility to the market.

Looking ahead, the escalator's revival is expected to enhance the overall shopping experience and could potentially boost visitor numbers to this historic market. This development aligns with local efforts to honor tradition while integrating modern conveniences, signaling a positive change for the community and its economy.

Why is it that walking up a defunct escalator is more tiring than walking up an ordinary flight of stairs?

This replacement was way too long in coming considering how many old people there are in Kad Luang.
