Sewing machine on the plane?

Featured Replies

Anyone ever travelled with a sewing machine as hand luggage? Im going with Emirates next, and wondering if anyone ever did travel with a sewing machine, and if its is possible.

A google search says so, but still. Removed all needles. It is a quite good old singer and alternative would be buying a new one in Thailand.

Any recommendations?

My wife says this is good enough, but I doubt at that price it will be the same as on good old Singer.

Just a thought. Why not call Emirates & ask. But alternatively you could check online.

You can carry the Brother GS2700 sewing machine as hand luggage on Emirates only if it meets their size and weight limits: max 55 x 38 x 22 cm and 7 kg for Economy Class.

Here's what you need to know:

✈️ Emirates Hand Luggage Rules (Economy Class)

  • Size limit: 55 cm x 38 cm x 22 cm
  • Weight limit: 7 kg
  • Only one item allowed — no additional personal item like a handbag or laptop bag

🧵 Brother GS2700 Sewing Machine Dimensions

  • Approximate size: 44 cm (W) x 19 cm (D) x 37 cm (H)
  • Weight: Around 6.5 kg (machine only, without packaging)

This means the GS2700 technically fits within Emirates’ size and weight limits, but there are a few caveats:

⚠️ Practical Considerations

  • Packaging: If you carry it in a box or padded case, the total dimensions may exceed the limit.
  • Security screening: You’ll need to remove the machine for inspection, and it may be subject to additional checks.
  • Cabin space: It must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat — if cabin crew deem it too bulky, they may require you to check it in.

Tips for Smooth Travel

  • Use a compact, soft-sided carry case to stay within size limits.
  • Weigh your bag before heading to the airport to ensure it’s under 7 kg.
  • Arrive early and speak with Emirates staff at check-in to confirm cabin approval.
  • Consider checking it in if you’re carrying other items or if the machine is boxed.
