Ho Chi Minh City is set to invest VND2.95 trillion (US$112 million) to expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and construct a new bridge, aiming to alleviate persistent traffic congestion and enhance a cultural space redevelopment in the area. This initiative is part of a proposal from the municipal Department of Construction, following a decision by city officials to convert a 32-hectare area along the Saigon River into a park and cultural district, shifting away from previously planned residential projects.

The expansion plan targets a 2.5-kilometer section of Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, stretching from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge. The current four-lane road will be widened to accommodate six to eight lanes, and an underpass with at least four lanes will be constructed at Hoang Dieu intersection. Moreover, the proposal includes replacing the over-a-century-old Tan Thuan 1 Bridge to better facilitate traffic flow.

For funding the project's preparation, the Department of Construction has requested cooperation from the Department of Finance. Concurrently, the Department of Planning–Architecture is set to hold an architectural design competition to ensure the new infrastructure aligns aesthetically with other developments along the Saigon River. These steps aim to integrate modern infrastructure seamlessly into historical surroundings.

Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, historically linked to the Nha Rong – Khanh Hoi Port, has been a key arterial road since its construction before 1975. Post-1992 upgrades have been insufficient in handling the increased urban traffic, making it one of the city's most congested areas. With the city's growing population, enhancing transport infrastructure has become a critical priority for easing traffic and supporting urban development.

As the project progresses, local and international architects are expected to take part in the design competition, with emphasis on creativity and functionality. Authorities anticipate that the improved infrastructure will not only reduce traffic congestion but also support urban renewal and tourism in the district. Construction is poised to commence once designs are finalized and funding is secured.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City plans a US$112 million street expansion and new bridge.
  • A design competition will ensure aesthetic integration with existing sites.
  • The move shifts a 32-hectare area from housing to a cultural park.
