Authorities in Chiang Rai have shut down an illegal karaoke venue in Pa Daet District after discovering girls aged 15 and 17 working as hostesses, in what officials say may involve human trafficking. The raid was carried out on 31 October 2025 as part of “Chiang Rai Fa Sai,” a coordinated provincial campaign to regulate entertainment businesses and combat trafficking.

Chiang Rai Governor Rattaphon Naradisorn ordered the operation, which was led by Deputy Governor Prasert Jitpleecheep, Provincial Clerk Supot Saenmee, and Pa Daet District Chief Khwantarakul Han Kla. They were joined by officials from the Chiang Rai Protection Centre for Children and Families, local administrative officers, and the police. The joint team acted on intelligence suggesting that minors were being employed at an unlicensed karaoke bar in Pa Ngae Subdistrict.

The establishment, located in a single-storey building with VIP karaoke rooms and six customer tables, was found to be operating without a valid entertainment licence. When officers entered, they found several patrons enjoying karaoke and three young women providing hostess services. Two of the girls were confirmed to be 15 and 17 years old. The venue manager was detained for questioning and officials reviewed the business documentation, discovering that it held only permits to sell alcohol and play video media.

Initial charges have been filed for operating an unlicensed entertainment establishment, employing minors and encouraging inappropriate behaviour among minors. Authorities have also referred the case to a multidisciplinary team to assess whether the minors are victims of human trafficking. Should trafficking be confirmed, additional charges will be brought under the Anti-Human Trafficking Act B.E. 2551 (2008), which carries severe penalties.

Provincial security chief Kongrob Krathumnat and Chiang Rai police commander Pol. Maj. Gen. Manop Senakul coordinated the enforcement side of the operation. Officials emphasised that the raid was part of a wider crackdown across northern Thailand targeting unregulated nightlife venues, particularly those suspected of exploiting minors.

Authorities will continue their investigation into the business operators and any potential networks behind the illegal employment of minors. The rescued girls are now under the care of child welfare officers, who will provide protection and support during the investigation process.
