Democrat Mikie Sherrill wins New Jersey's governor's race

Featured Replies

Democrats scored a big win in the battle for New Jersey governor on Nov. 4, with reports showing voters elected U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill over former state lawmaker Jack Ciattarelli, a Republican ally of President Donald Trump who had embraced the Make America Great Again movement.

Of all the 2025 off-year races, New Jersey was expected to be the best shot for Republicans, according to political forecasters who rated the race as leaning Democratic. Ciattarelli had for months tried to poke holes into Sherrill's record, arguing she was "out of touch" as he sought to anchor her to Garden State problems and the unpopularity of term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.

What's really significant in this election is how the Hispanic vote went.  Hispanics in NJ are concentrated in the NE part of the state.Hudson and Passaic are the most heavily Hispanic.

In 2024 Passaic actually went for Trump by 50% to 47%

In the current election it went for Sherrill 57% to 42%.

Hudson County,  in 2024 went  62% to 34% in favor of Harris.

In 2025 it went 74% to 24% in favor of Sherrill.

This is in keeping with polls showing that Hispanic Americans are not happy with the way Trump is going about deporting undocumented aliens. They were under the impression that he would be going after dangerous criminals. It looks like they are well disabused of that belief now.

A point well made.  Hispanics throughout the US must be regretting their role in electing Trump.

Really? Do you think Trump was being coy about his plans for illegal immigrants in the 2024 campaign?  New Jersey is a solidly blue state for decades. The real shock was Trump outperforming expectation in 2024

Latinos sour on Trump over tariffs, the economy, immigration raids

President Trump made historic gains for the GOP among Latino voters last year, but polls and other indicators suggest their support for him is falling amid growing anger over his handling of the economy and immigration.

Why it matters: Latinos' rising discontent could mean trouble for the GOP heading into the 2026 midterms, and undermine Republican redistricting efforts — namely in Texas — partly aimed at exploiting the party's recent gains among such voters

Trump’s approval on immigration, economy declines among Hispanic voters: Poll

President Trump’s favorability among Hispanic voters has dropped by 19 percentage points over the past 10 months as the White House charts an aggressive approach to immigration enforcement and economic reform, according to a poll

Twenty-seven percent of Hispanic voters said they approve of the way Trump is handling his job while 73 percent disapproved, according to The Associated Press-NORC Center poll results released Friday. ..

Approximately a quarter of Hispanic adults surveyed said they support deporting all immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, while roughly half of the respondents said they oppose the policy and others said they don’t have an opinion.
