Udomsuksa School, a private institution in Bangkok, announced it will close at the end of the 2025 academic year due to a decline in enrollment. The decision, prompted by Thailand's decreasing birth rate and various economic pressures, will see the school operating until May 2026. This marks the end of an era for the school, which has served the community for decades.

The school attributed the closure to insufficient tuition revenues caused by the dwindling number of students, impacting its ability to sustain staff, curriculum, and facilities. Founded in 1975 by Assoc Prof Kasemsri Watcharasakunee, Udomsuksa expanded over the years to accommodate hundreds of students. It currently resides on more than seven rai of land and includes 61 classrooms and a gymnasium.

The closure has sparked reactions online, with former students and parents expressing sadness and nostalgia. Many are also concerned about the implications of Thailand's decreasing youth population on the educational landscape. This trend reflects wider challenges faced by private schools nationwide, as Thailand’s birth rate has significantly dropped.

Experts and education officials see this as a wake-up call for reforms in the private school sector to enhance sustainability. The Bangkok Post reported that the situation underscores the need for strategic changes, particularly in addressing demographic shifts and ensuring economic viability.

As Udomsuksa approaches its final year, the school promises to assist students and families in transitioning smoothly, including helping parents find alternative educational institutions for their children.

Key Takeaways

  • Udomsuksa School in Bangkok to close due to low enrollment.
  • Declining birth rates in Thailand impact private education.
  • Reform needed for sustainability in the private school sector.

Reportedly up to ฿45,000 per month just for tuition fees. Generally, this is the price per semester for private EP / bilingual schools in Bangkok.
