Camillian Hospital for Colonoscopy Anyone?

Featured Replies

Camillian Hospital seems to have the best price which is currently 18,000 including anesthesia. The hospital doesn't look very convenient to the BTS but manageable

Has anyone used this hospital for colonoscopy or anything else? How did you u find the hospital in general and colonoscopy specifically?

*First time having anything up my ass

฿8200 at Chula (plus the initial doctors visit to schedule) includes sedation.

Its a mid-range private hospital - Wife has been there, no complaints.

Price seems reasonable - my dual Colonoscopy / Endoscopy checkup cost 48,000 baht at Bangkok Hospital.

Worst part is the 'preparation' (the laxative and ensuing result) - the process itself is was literally unmemorable as I was sedated and don't remember any of it apart from a very brief moment where I 'awoke' and started asking questions so they upped 'whatever it was' that made me sleep - its not an anaesthetic, but was something IV to take the edge off.

Ask Harrisfan for advice.

Thats an excellent price - but did you have to wait very long for your appointments etc ?

No wait at all.   Could have done it the same week that I saw the doctor at the special clinic but I was in no rush, so I waited a couple weeks.

Had I gone the the standard general clinic route,  I certainly would have had a much longer wait but the original doctors visit would have been ฿250 instead of approximately ฿1500 and the colonoscopy possibly (probably?)  would have been less expensive also, as the sheet I show is from the Special Clinic (July 2025).

That makes good sense. For anyone self-paying for this kind of investigation - which many people end up doing because some insurers classify it as an outpatient procedure - the Special Clinics at Chula Hospital are a very useful.

My wife has used these clinics and noted that while the waiting time can be a little longer and the consultation slightly more rushed than in a private hospital, the trade-off is a significantly lower cost while still being seen by experienced specialist doctors.

It’s worth understanding what these clinics actually are as Chulaoperates two main systems:

- After-Hours Special Clinics, which run Monday to Friday 16:00–20:00 and weekends 08:00–12:00 hrs.

- Premium Care Clinics, which run during normal hours, typically Monday to Friday 08:00–16:00 hrs.

Both function as a higher-service outpatient option within a public hospital setting - effectively a private-style service channel offering faster access and staffed by senior physicians and teaching specialists.

Appointments are required, and services range from standard consultations to full diagnostic imaging.

For investigations like this, the Special Clinic system is certainly an option well worth considering.

Do both after hours and special clinics fall under the umbrella of the 'Special Clinic'?

Do you think it possible to go in at say 3pm and get registered and then see a doc for the *initial consultation* and then schedule the procedure a short time later as Airalee has provided hope?

@Airalee On the day of the colonoscopy were you in a long queue for that or was your time and schedule relatively honored?

Another good thing about Camillian is that price includes polyp removal (biopsy extra)

I can't do it until next year so the price will probably go up. My guess is $1,500 baht or 10 percent

Depending upon what service you require, the special clinic can be substantially  more expensive than the general clinic and even more expensive than some private hospitals.

For example….Bilateral inguinal hernia (Laparoscopic/mesh) surgery.

Special Clinic ฿230k

General Clinic ฿70k

Cheap private hospitals in Bangkok approximately ฿120-150k

Expensive private hospitals ฿300-400k+

And finally…for comparison….

USA hernia surgery centers ฿130k (open bilateral) - ฿250k (laparoscopic bilateral)

Zero queue.  I was the only person in the waiting area and waited no more than 15 minutes for the nurse to bring me into the procedure room.  There were 3 other people in the recovery area afterwards.   Surprisingly uncrowded.  Dr Maneerat was the gastroenterologist.  Usually works at Bumrungrad.  The original wait to see her at the special clinic was longer.

I have no experience with the premium clinic.  First I’ve heard of it.

Ok, thx....but this simple colonoscopy? You stated you were in and out in a flash

I think its entirely possible to... (at the regular Chula Hospital / and separately at the special clinics).

a) Go there and register, then

b) Get an appointment (possibly a few weeks later)

c) Schedule the Colonoscopy

But - I don't think you can register and get an appointment on the same day at the regular hospital (you'll never know until you try though) you might at the special clinics.

As per Airalee's comment above - it would be worth costing the colonoscopy at the regular vs special clinic.

Special clinic - two options, likely two different prices (so 3 prices in total each with varying levels of convenience and timing).

If thats including 'polyp' removal - then its a great price....

Note: not everyone will have Polyps anyway (I didn't).

Its great that we are discussing and normalising this - such investigations should be part of a normal Medical Checkup package IMO...

But then I also believe that insurance packages should encourage such check-ups (and cover the cost) - which long term might prevent them from more costly treatment and thus result in an active saving.

Polyp removal is extra.  You can see the prices on the list I posted.

FWIW…the minister of commerce was on television (news) a little over a month ago chastising the private hospitals for charging too much and consequently forcing Thai people into the government hospitals.  I’d have to say I agree with her when I can get a hernia surgery for less in the US than in Thailand.

Indeed - they should also be criticised for their 'duplicity' and dual charging practices.

For example - my Wife was given a price - and then a discussion ensued with the Finance team at the Private hospital who realised the cost would be different her insurance coverage was with an international provider not a Thai provider....

Its good that people in Thailand are this naive and clumsy when discussion such dual practices - but also its a real disappointment that such dual practices exist in the first place - insurance companies shouldn't stand for it either.

When you can get hernia treatment for less in the US than Thailand - then thats quite telling.

Of course, I could get 'knee surgery' arthroscopy in the UK for free (on the NHS) - but practically its impossible, because I can't schedule appointments and an operation on my timing terms - whereas at a private hospital in Bangkok I could tell them 'operate on Monday morning'...   The same with the Colonoscopy - it was on my 'time frame'.

I wonder if the 'Special Clinic' offers the same flexibility (within reason of course) with timing.

Another facet of medical treatment in Thailand is as you alluded to - chosing your Dr. who has expertise and works at top tier private hospital and also at a public hospital such as Chula or Siriraj...

@MarcusAurelius @ Chula

If going the walk in general area, normal service, the wait can be months.  Pay for 'off hrs service' and maybe a week.   I had both scopes done, a week or so after asking about on 'normal service', and the Q was something like 6 months long.

Didn't know they had a special clinic, but after the gal told me about the Q, and next open slot, I asked how to have done earlier and she explained the 'off hours' thingy.   I had already contacted the doc to perform the scopes and researched him, before even popping into Chula.

I forget exact price, but all in, 2 scopes (endo / colon) + off hrs fee was < 30k, maybe 28k all in.  Excellent service & consultation after.  Snipped off 2 polyps, (no extra charge). which I read some do charge per polyp.

I've used Camillian extensively for 'Health Check Up'  almost yearly for 10-15 yrs, and good service & pricing.   Ultrasound gal there is excellent, and probably why I stuck with them.   Rest is simple blood work, urine, stool and the standard stuff w/ full abdominal untrasound, 'executive program' I think.

I'm going to go get registered as I'm not registered at any government hospital anyway.

Airalee stated could be fast for this procedure. I should probably do it ther6 even if there's a wait. I know underlying issues.

Thanks

I don't have any issues but sort of cajoled into it by a few acquaintances given that I'm 65. I've got no problem discussing it.

I don't know what's involved but it seems like a very expensive procedure someone sticking a camera up my ass

@Airalee does it include polyp removal? I'm sure it doesn't include the biopsy. Thanks
