HCM City has initiated a VNĐ34 billion (approximately US$1.29 million) project to install architectural lighting on key heritage sites. This endeavor is designed to enhance security and spotlight the cultural and historic importance of structures like the Thủ Ngữ Flagpole, Móng Bridge, and Bến Thành Market. Funded by the municipal budget, the lighting project aims to create modern visual effects that illuminate the city’s heritage and urban landscape.

As of November 13, large-scale lighting installations are ongoing at Móng Bridge, featuring 414 decorative LED units, 200 meters of LED strips, and 12 lamp posts. The design incorporates RGB LEDs with color-changing scenarios and anti-glare louvers to enhance the bridge’s architecture. Construction on other sites, like the City Children’s House and the HCM City Museum, began on June 12, 2025, with a contract value exceeding VNĐ34.4 billion.

The lighting strategy focuses on “beautiful lighting without glare,” using high-quality LED fixtures to ensure even light distribution while keeping installations discreet. The city uses warm and cool white tones, with RGB systems reserved for special events. The goal is to provide a comfortable and harmonious night-time landscape, balancing conservation with creative lighting.

Future implications include better preservation and honoring of the city’s landmarks. The project minimizes disruption by coordinating installations with local schedules, using barriers, and opting for night-time work to mitigate impact. The initiative is expected to conclude promptly, with a two-year warranty ensuring maintenance of installations, covering defects unless caused by external factors.

Looking ahead, HCM City's Department of Culture and Sports believes this project will both preserve landmarks and transform the city’s nightscape. The completed initiative will offer a modern, civilized urban environment that merges creativity with heritage conservation, reported Vietnam News.

Key Takeaways

  • HCM City's VNĐ34 billion lighting project enhances urban heritage sites.
  • The project is funded by the municipal budget and includes several landmarks.
  • LED systems aim to balance lighting impact with historical preservation.

Do the illuminations have to be so blatant and gaudy? Why not lighting that illustrates the interesting architectural features?
