A Pattaya event turned sour for a comedy troupe and musicians after a fake organizer disappeared with over 430,000 baht meant for their fees. The fraud unfolded on November 18, near Soi Khao Talo, where a concert featuring comedian Foy Thong Chuen Yim, singer Paeng Fun, and The Lamud band was scheduled. As the event drew a crowd, performers were informed they would be paid after their acts, but the organizer vanished with the funds.

The suspect, known only as Wa, along with her husband, posed as intermediaries between the acts and venue, taking the full budget upfront. They convinced the venue owner of their legitimacy and promised to handle payments. However, when the performances were over, no payment was forthcoming, and the couple’s phones were switched off by the next day.

Performers, like Foy Thong, expressed frustration, stating they waited in vain for their payments. It was later discovered that the couple had absconded with the money intended for the artists. Police suspect the couple was pressured by loan sharks and may have used the stolen funds to clear debts. The venue owner, also victimized, joined the performers to lodge a complaint with Bang Lamung Police on November 19.

As an impact of the scam, artists are left to bear the costs of travel and lost earnings. To aid the investigation, Foy Thong released a photo of himself with the suspect, urging the public to assist. In the aftermath, police advise performers and organizers to ensure proper verification and secure contracts with clear terms to prevent similar incidents.

Key Takeaways

  • Performers in Pattaya lost over 430,000 baht in a scam by a fake event organizer.
  • Police suspect the couple used the funds to settle personal debts.
  • Authorities urge artists to verify organizer credentials and secure contracts.
