Despite Friendly Talk, Mamdani Insists Trump Is a Fascist

Just days after a seemingly amiable meeting with US President Donald Trump, New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani reiterated on Sunday that he still regards Trump as a fascist and a threat to democracy. Despite their contrasting views, Mamdani expressed appreciation for the candid discussion they had in the Oval Office. He emphasised the importance of acknowledging disagreements while working towards common goals.

In conversation with NBC's "Meet the Press," Mamdani affirmed his past criticisms of Trump, despite their friendly encounter. He pointed out the requirement for open discussions about political differences and stated his focus on delivering for New Yorkers rather than merely making a political statement.

Mamdani aims to demonstrate that, despite disagreements, a beneficial relationship with the federal administration is possible.

The meeting, which lasted about 25 minutes, ended with both leaders presenting a united front in a news conference. This was a marked change from their previous exchange of heated words, with Trump threatening to restrict federal funding to New York and Mamdani criticising federal initiatives for immigration enforcement. The leaders remarked on finding common ground on several issues, sparking hope for future collaboration.

When asked on Friday about his views on Trump, Mamdani faced a humorous interruption from the president, who suggested he simply agree with the 'fascist' label to keep things straightforward. Nonetheless, Mamdani described the meeting as productive, with both focusing on affordability and public safety in New York. Trump did not firmly assure that he would refrain from deploying federal agents to the city, but suggested other areas might require more attention.

Looking ahead, Mamdani remains committed to improving life for New Yorkers by tackling pressing issues with the help of the NYPD. Despite potential flashpoints, the dialogue with Trump has paved the way for ongoing collaboration on public safety and other crucial areas, eported ABC News.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mamdani still views Trump as a threat to democracy despite their meeting.
  • Both leaders are open to a working relationship focusing on key city issues.
  • Trump and Mamdani found some areas of mutual agreement despite previous conflicts.

Well of course.

Weak and increasingly unpopular Trump being briefly sociable to a widely supported political opponent during a face to face meeting is no reason to believe he’s had an epiphany and decided he really ought to uphold his oath* of office.

*Curiously Trump mumbled through his oath and did not place his hand on either of the two bibles offered up.

I agree with Mamdani, at the same I don't think it's wise for him to express those feelings. He should have stopped at this.

You gotta laugh at this stage.

An enterprising reporter should ask Mamdani to define fascism. The response would likely be amusing.

Mamdani playing to the leftist crowd.

He is correct Trump is somewhere between a fascist and a Marxist, and Mamdani was smart to attempt to cozy up to the goon, who is very easily manipulated by flattery.

Trump despises democracy and seems to be doing everything in his power to erode it. Fortunately things are catching up to him and he's had the worst November of his lifetime, and is starting to realize that people are not going to tolerate his nonsense any longer.

Why is he ashamed of it?  Is it because that, within himself, there is the knowledge that it is wrong, and that he is letting the Steves steer him into it?

Mussolini said it out loud.  He should try telling it like it is, for a change!

Perhaps it dawned on him that by defaming NYC it gets him a knee to the groin in property values.

Something the world is well aware of and has been for a long time.

Well, I guess then that those who run Wikipedia are also...

"Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist political ideology and movement that rose to prominence in early-20th-century Europe. Fascism is characterized by support for a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived interest of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy. Opposed to communism, democracy, liberalism, pluralism, and socialism, fascism is at the far-right of the traditional left–right spectrum." ~ Source, Wikipedia.

That's a perfect description of Trump's presidency.

Cite some examples.

Of course he's a fascist but any mayor of NYC needs to deal with any president regardless.

Mamdani forgets that fascism/oppression can be found at both extremes of the political spectrum... hence why the real answers are usually to be found in the middle on most topics.

Mamdani is not old enough to have  experienced fascism along with many others who readily use the word without any prior knowledge.

Well yes Mamdani did win an astounding electoral victory which could not have been achieved by only attracting the votes of ‘leftists’.

Try not to be so salty over the result.
