A female wild elephant was discovered dead with suspected gunshot wounds near the border of Khao Laem and Thong Pha Phum national parks in Kanchanaburi province, western Thailand. The incident, reported today by Dome Chansuwan, head of Khao Laem National Park, highlights ongoing challenges in wildlife conservation in the region.

Rangers were alerted by a local resident, named Chon, about the elephant's body found in a plantation in Pilok Kee village. National park officers verified that the location is within the Khao Chang Phueak Forest Reserve, confirming the presence of approximately 20 gunshot wounds on the elephant.

Authorities have mobilized veterinary and forensic teams from the Protected Area Regional Office 3 and Kanchanaburi police to conduct an autopsy and investigate the cause of death. Law enforcement and park officials have secured the area, ensuring it is safeguarded until investigations are complete and actively searching for further evidence.

In response to this incident, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is accelerating efforts to implement a wild elephant tracking system to enhance community safety. The system will provide weekly updates via a mobile app and establish a rapid response unit to address such situations efficiently.

Further measures include constructing barriers, managing elephant populations, and ensuring adequate food and water sources. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to prevent elephants from leaving their habitats in search of sustenance, a growing concern in eastern Thailand, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A female elephant was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in Thailand.
  • Authorities are investigating with forensic teams to determine the exact cause.
  • A tracking system is being developed to enhance safety and manage elephant populations.

Shot 20 times! I hope they find the dumb ass that did this and make him pay for it. The government needs to really get wildlife patrols around the perimeter. If they have any, they obviously need more, plus they need to educate these old farmers who are trying to claim more land and take away the wildlife. Sad

Very sad. I hope the shooter is fined and jailed.

This week a young elephant was electrocuted by high voltage fence setup by farmers.
