A Thai woman, Chonthirat Sakulku, 65, amazed family and temple staff by briefly reviving inside a coffin before passing away on December 14 at Bang Yai Hospital. Her initial signs of life were observed at Wat Rat Prakong Tham in Phitsanulok, where she was presumed dead due to a serious illness. On December 16, her funeral rites and cremation took place under the temple’s free funeral program.

Chonthirat had been brought to the temple for cremation when movement was noticed from inside her coffin. Medical intervention revealed low blood sugar as the cause of her revival, leading to her immediate transfer to the hospital. Despite efforts to stabilize her condition, she later succumbed to a urinary tract infection, as noted on her death certificate.

This unexpected incident drew attention to similar situations. Earlier this year, a family in Phatthalung province conducted a funeral for their son after a motorcycle accident, only to find out he was alive and hospitalized. This prompted questions during the ceremony and clarifications from the hospital revealed the actual condition of the boy.

In another case, rescuers in Chumphon helped a man stuck in mud for seven days after a fisherman mistook him for a corpse. These events highlight the importance of thorough medical verification before presuming death, showcasing the complexities faced in emergency and healthcare services.

Family members extended gratitude to the temple’s abbot and staff for their support during the ordeal, while the temple thanked the community for their empathy. These incidences have prompted authorities to evaluate and possibly enhance procedural protocols in such situations, reported The Thaiger.
