A Japanese tourist, Nomura Kazuya, is set to face trial in Ho Chi Minh City after being charged with the "deliberate infliction of bodily harm," following a dispute that led to the death of his compatriot, Nagata Yuijro. The altercation, which began over cleaning duties, escalated into a physical confrontation between the two, who were sharing a holiday rental. Nagata died after collapsing two days post-dispute, with a forensic examination revealing multiple injuries.

Nomura and Nagata, both Japanese nationals, were on vacation in Vietnam and staying at an apartment in District 7. On January 5, 2024, an argument ensued over cleaning responsibilities. The situation intensified with Nagata allegedly attacking Nomura with a frying pan, and Nomura retaliating with a plastic water bottle. They ended the night nursing injuries but did not seek medical assistance.

Nomura cooperated with investigators following Nagata's sudden collapse on January 7, 2024, as they were leaving their apartment. The forensic findings pointed to traumatic brain damage and closed chest trauma as causes of Nagata's death, consistent with the fight. Nomura has expressed remorse, and the victim’s family is seeking a compensation of 50 million yen (US$319,700) from him.

The trial is slated for December 5 at the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court. The case highlights the seriousness of the charges under Vietnam’s Penal Code, and could result in significant legal consequences for Nomura. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of resolving conflicts without violence, particularly among foreign visitors, reported VN Express.

  • The confrontation began over cleaning duties and escalated to violence involving a pan and a bottle.
