The Cabinet has approved a flat fare of 40 baht for commuters on the Red and Purple Line metro trains, effective from December 1, 2025. Passengers must use specified transit cards to qualify, with the measure applying for one year until November 30, 2026, or as the Cabinet decides. Students will pay 30 baht per day, while other groups may retain existing fare benefits.

This follows the current maximum fare of 20 baht per day, which ends on November 30, 2025. The Red Line comprises the Nakhon Withee Line (Bangkok – Taling Chan) and the Thani Ratchaya Line (Bangkok – Rangsit) under the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The Purple Line Metro is operated by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA).

Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, announced the decision at the Government House on November 25, 2025, after the Cabinet approved proposals from the Ministry of Transport (MOT). The SRT will request state budget allocations to cover revenue shortfalls, as permitted by the State Financial Management Act, B.E. 2561. MOT will evaluate the measures annually, considering passenger numbers and revenue to guide future decisions.

Certain groups remain exempt or receive discounts. State welfare cardholders continue to receive 750 baht per month fares at standard rates per trip. People with disabilities and children under 90 cm travel free, while those 90–120 cm pay 50% per trip.

The new daily pass differs from the previous flat fare, as passengers must now use EMV Contactless Cards to qualify. MOT, SRT, and MRTA are tasked with publicising the eligibility rules before the scheme begins to ensure smooth implementation.
