A comprehensive investigation will look into claims of Bangkok Remand Prison officers granting illicit privileges to Chinese inmates, as stated by Justice Minister Pol Lt Gen Rutthaphon Naowarat. This decision comes after the former chief warden, Manop Chomchuen, alleged he was unfairly targeted related to these claims. Lt Gen Rutthaphon assured that justice would be upheld for all involved parties.

The inquiry follows Manop's assertions of innocence and accusations of a scheme to discredit him after he provided testimony in a separate case concerning senior Justice Ministry officials. Despite acknowledging potential dissatisfaction among staff due to transfers, Lt Gen Rutthaphon emphasized that the allegations need thorough verification. To date, four officers have been suspended, with further actions pending based on evidence.

According to Lt Gen Rutthaphon, many officers transferred had not engaged in any misconduct. Their reassignments filled vacancies resulting from earlier staffing changes. Investigations include scrutiny of financial and travel records linked to Mr. Manop, though these details remain confidential due to ongoing inquiries.

In parallel, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has initiated its own investigation into the potential abuse of power or breaches of the Anti-Corruption Organic Act relating to these prison privileges. An NACC team conducted a recent inspection of the facility to collect pertinent information, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • An investigation scrutinizes claims against Bangkok Remand Prison staff.
  • Former chief claims the allegations are part of a plot against him.
  • The NACC is conducting a parallel inquiry into possible corruption.
