Ho Chi Minh City Tackles Alarming Air Pollution Levels

HCM City officials are urgently addressing worsening air pollution caused by traffic, construction, industry, and waste treatment. Recent data indicates a significant rise in days with unhealthy air quality, particularly in the early mornings due to accumulated dust and pollutants. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a major concern, often exceeding national and WHO guidelines.

The city's heavy traffic, with millions of vehicles, significantly contributes to emissions, making the transport sector accountable for over 50% of air pollutants. Đặng Nguyễn Phương Trinh, the city’s Department of Agriculture and Environment deputy director, noted efforts like monitoring pollution and managing emissions but admitted current measures lack strictness. Plans include transitioning the city's bus fleet to electric or green energy by 2030 and introducing more electric bus routes next year.

Expanding public transport is crucial, as the city currently lacks sufficient infrastructure, with one metro line in trial and a limited bus system. Without this development, private vehicle use will rise, exacerbating pollution. Construction dust also contributes significantly, often due to non-compliance with environmental regulations. Stricter inspections and higher fines are being enforced to ensure adherence.

Industrial zones add to the pollution issue, with ongoing violations despite existing emission treatments. Authorities are enhancing supervision, particularly targeting night-time illegal emissions. The health risks from air pollution are severe, affecting nearly 10 million residents. Medical professionals report increased respiratory illnesses on poor air quality days, emphasizing the need for better air quality monitoring and public awareness.

The city plans to expand its air monitoring network to 100 stations by 2030 and encourages residents to stay informed about pollution levels. Environmental experts advocate for coordinated efforts, including public transport development, green space expansion, and emission fees. The city is examining successful measures from other Asian cities while adapting them to local conditions.

Public awareness campaigns and educational programs are being expanded to promote better environmental practices. The Department of Agriculture and Environment is preparing a comprehensive management plan to submit to the People’s Committee, highlighting prioritized actions for emission reduction and stricter enforcement. Long-term commitment and citizen involvement are essential for restoring clean air amidst the city's growth, reported Vietnam News.

Key Takeaways

  • Air pollution in HCM City is worsening, primarily due to traffic.
  • The city plans to switch to green energy buses and enhance public transport.
