Construction on the Dinh Khao Bridge, a 4.3-kilometer span designed to replace the ferry across the Co Chien River, will begin on December 19. The bridge will improve travel across the Mekong Delta and connect key regional highways, facilitating better transportation. Vinh Long Province officials revealed that the project is a public-private partnership under a build–operate–transfer contract led by the provincial Transportation Project Management Unit.

The new route originates from Provincial Road 902 in Nhon My Commune and concludes at National Highway 57 in Phu Phung Commune. The bridge's main feature is a 1.5-kilometer section over the Co Chien River, which will be 17.5 meters wide with four lanes, supporting speeds up to 80 kph. The total investment surpasses VND2.852 trillion ($106 million), with nearly VND613 billion allocated for compensation and resettlement, and over VND1.645 trillion set aside for construction. The project is slated to take three years to complete.

The Co Chien River, extending over 80 kilometers, acts as a natural boundary between Vinh Long, Ben Tre, and Tra Vinh. The Dinh Khao Bridge, the second bridge over this river, is expected to eliminate ferry dependence, reduce travel time, alleviate congestion, and boost connectivity across the Mekong Delta.

A decade ago, the Co Chien Bridge, connecting Ben Tre and Tra Vinh, was built with a VND2.3 trillion investment. This bridge significantly reduced the travel distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Tra Vinh and Soc Trang by about 70 kilometers. The upcoming Dinh Khao Bridge is anticipated to continue improving regional transport infrastructure, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • The Dinh Khao Bridge construction starts December 19 with a $106 million investment.
  • It aims to replace the ferry, enhancing connectivity in the Mekong Delta.
  • Regional travel time and congestion are expected to improve significantly.
