Microsoft’s First Team Photo Shows How Small the Giant Began

December 7 1978

Microsoft’s very first staff photo, taken in 1978, offers a striking reminder of just how modest the tech giant’s beginnings were. Long before the company became one of the world’s most powerful technology leaders, it operated as a tiny start-up in Albuquerque, New Mexico — tucked into a simple office near a strip mall.

The group pictured represented every employee Microsoft had at the time. Just a handful of young programmers, support staff, and administrators stood together, united by a shared belief that personal computers were on the brink of transforming everyday life. Most people had never used a computer, yet this small team was already envisioning a digital future.

A 22-year-old Bill Gates appears seated in the front row.

At the time, he was still months away from relocating the company to Seattle — a move that would eventually shape Microsoft’s growth into a global software powerhouse. The others in the photo were early engineers who spent countless hours writing code, fixing software bugs, and convincing skeptical buyers that computers had a place in homes and businesses.

The image captures Microsoft at a pivotal moment: right before its rapid rise, before Windows, before Office, and before it became one of the most profitable companies in history. In 1978, Microsoft generated roughly $1 million in annual revenue — a modest figure that would surge into the hundreds of billions decades later.

Today, the photo stands as a time capsule of innovation, ambition, and a company on the edge of changing the world.

Key Takeaways:

Microsoft’s 1978 staff photo shows the entire team when the company was still a tiny start-up in Albuquerque.

A young Bill Gates appears in the image months before moving the company to Seattle.

Microsoft earned about $1 million in revenue in 1978 — a number that would grow exponentially in the decades to come.

Look at the racism and sexism, all white men except for two white woman. I bet you the company would have been a lot better if they had some enforced Equity guidelines to ensure proper representation of all minority groups

That was 1978.

Microsoft's equity guidelines today:

focus on anti-discrimination, fair pay, inclusive culture, and ethical conduct, with recent shifts like removing mandatory DEI from performance reviews but maintaining pay equity analysis. Key areas include a commitment to non-discrimination (race, gender, etc.), pay equity (achieving $1 for $1), accountability through goals (though evolving), and upholding core values like respect and integrity, all detailed in their Standards of Business Conduct, Diversity & Inclusion reports, and Corporate Governance policies.

So they showed how it can work. But who knows - maybe they are shifting back to the 1970's.

In the photo are 7 of 8 Microsoft programmers; consisting of

Bob O'Rear, Bob Greenberg, Marc McDonald, Gordon Letwin, Steve Wood, Bob Wallace, Bill Gates (co-founder), Paul Allen (co-founder). Ric Weiland was not in the photo.

3 of the 4 support & office personnel; Jim Lane, Andrea Lewis, Marla Wood.

Miriam Lubow  was not in the photo.

I note the comments about the lack of diversity of the employees.  Sure, there are no Indian software programmers in the photo, 🙂 but it was a diverse and eclectic group of people. They all have their own stories Some of the more notable people are;

Bob Greenberg left MS to create Cabbage Patch dolls. Very different than BASIC programming.

Ric Weiland was a generous donor to the gay community. His legacy is one of funding public health for gay people who at the time were marginalized and neglected and his support for social justice activities has inspired other wealthy people.

Miriam Lebow was the office manager. Her family were Italian jews who fled to the USA in 1940. She was the only original employee who did not become a millionaire as she had sold off her shares to pay for her children's education. Her presence spoke to the opportunities that the USA offered immigrants.

Paul Allen was a genius who never lost his sense of social responsibility. He contributed $2 billion+ to scientific research, education. environmental conservation, public health and public arts and music

The photo was from an era when the USA could develop and grow its own technology.

That era of innovation and honest entrepreneurship is over, worldwide. Now billionaires just buy the innovations of others. Apple started with only two guys.
