Vietnam has announced plans to establish a dual-use airport on Tho Chu Island, a critical move for regional security and connectivity. This development follows the submission of a research dossier by the Ministry of National Defense, marking the first step toward creating an air link for the island, which currently relies solely on sea transport. The project aims to overcome current travel challenges, including lengthy sea journeys influenced by weather, impacting everything from medical services to tourism.

Tho Chu Island, situated over 100 kilometers from Phu Quoc, is strategically important with a population of about 1,800. Party General Secretary To Lam emphasized its significance as a stabilizing force in the region during his visit last month. He advocated for creating a 4C-standard airport, with future plans for expansion to accommodate large aircraft, including models like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.

The lack of air access currently hampers several essential operations, and local officials highlight its impact on defense, security, and economic prospects. The government's broader commitment to infrastructure development also underpins these efforts. Projects such as expressways linking key regions and the upcoming Long Thanh International Airport are part of a national push to enhance connectivity and economic growth.

Vietnam is advancing an ambitious infrastructure agenda, with expectations to complete 3,803 kilometers of expressways and 1,700 kilometers of coastal roads by year-end. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh lauded the workforce for overcoming environmental challenges and reaffirmed the target to expand the expressway network significantly soon.

Looking forward, the review process for the airport dossier sets the stage for potential construction and operational planning phases. Expanding the air, land, and sea transport framework could significantly boost Vietnam’s strategic capabilities and economic opportunities, reported VN Express.
