Thai police have arrested 20 African nationals in Kamphaeng Phet province after one contacted the South African Embassy, alleging they were held against their will. The group, intending to go to Cambodia, was found in a house in Thepnakhon subdistrict. They have been charged with overstaying their visas.

The detainees, comprising 15 South Africans, four Namibians, and one Zimbabwean, had valid passports but expired visas. Police were tipped off on December 11, discovering the group at the provided location. These individuals had reportedly escaped KK Park, a scam operation in Myanmar, after military airstrikes on the facility.

Authorities believe the group entered Thailand from Myawaddy, Myanmar, via Tak province, traveling through forest routes before being transported to their temporary refuge. Officers are now investigating whether the individuals were victims of trafficking or willing participants in fraudulent activities.

Through interviews with interpreters, the detainees claimed their passports were seized upon starting scam work at KK Park. Each was tasked with generating $1,580 in fraudulent revenue to earn a commission. Passports were only returned once these quotas were achieved.

The detainees estimated around 300 foreign nationals worked at the compound, which was abandoned after the attack. They asserted that Chinese operators facilitated their escape to Thailand and onward plans to Cambodia. Continued questioning aims to clarify their involvement and whether criminal charges in other areas apply.

Looking forward, the investigation remains active as authorities collaborate across agencies. Determining the legal status of these individuals and potential trafficking aspects is a priority, reported Khaosod.
