Thammasat University experts have advised Thailand to prioritize national sovereignty and stability over peace negotiations with Cambodia. They argue that current conditions require Thailand to frame its response as self-defense against Cambodian actions that allegedly infringed on Thailand's sovereignty. Assistant Dean Thanapat Chatnakrob emphasized the need for stability before pursuing sustainable peace talks under existing agreements.

Evidence suggests that Cambodia initiated actions affecting Thailand's sovereignty, prompting defensive measures. Thanapat highlighted Thailand's efforts to communicate internationally that, despite its superior military power, it has acted with restraint, targeting only military threats and avoiding civilian casualties. He stated that peace negotiations could resume once tensions ease.

Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen's portrayal of Cambodia as a victimized nation has drawn attention, according to Thanapat, who commended Thailand's diplomatic messaging. He noted the importance of clarifying that Thailand's measures are defensive, aimed at neutralizing imminent threats rather than retaliating for previous attacks.

Wilaiwan Jongwilaikasem of Thammasat's Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication stressed that Thailand's communication should focus on peaceful resolution and human rights. She pointed out that while Cambodia has been proactive, Thailand's response has been reactive, highlighting the need for a strategic communications unit to convey critical messages about Thailand's stance consistently.

Cambodian leaders have been crafting a narrative since July depicting the nation as suffering under Thai aggression, gaining traction in international media like CNN and BBC. To counter this narrative, Wilaiwan urged Thailand to provide verifiable evidence swiftly, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand is prioritizing stability and self-defense over peace talks.
