A former flight attendant in Ho Chi Minh City, Dinh Thi Thanh Tuyen, has been sentenced to four years in prison for her involvement in a prostitution ring at a karaoke restaurant. Her partner, Zhang Lei, received a three-and-a-half-year sentence for the same charge. Five other employees were sentenced to terms ranging from three to three-and-a-half years.

Tuyen and Zhang managed the Tai Nguyen Fortuner II restaurant on Tran Hung Dao Street since 2022. They set up a prostitution operation at the venue, primarily serving clients from China, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Investigations revealed that female attendants were offered for prices between VND4 million (US$152) for a session and VND7 million for overnight services.

The system they established meticulously logged activities and divided attendants into groups based on their willingness to engage in sex work. Authorities uncovered these operations during an October 17, 2023, raid on the restaurant and nearby hotels, where five attendants were caught in the act.

During the trial, Tuyen and the other defendants admitted to the charges. Zhang claimed he turned to prostitution due to declining restaurant revenues, although he argued he did not receive a direct cut from the transactions. A substantial sum of VND20 billion was seized from Zhang's residence but later returned to his mother, along with VND200 million from the restaurant.

Looking forward, this case highlights the ongoing challenge of tackling organized prostitution in Vietnam. Authorities may increase scrutiny on similar businesses to prevent such rings from operating. Legislative or regulatory changes may follow to further deter exploitation in the hospitality sector, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Dinh Thi Thanh Tuyen received a four-year prison sentence for her role in a prostitution ring.
  • Zhang Lei and five others also received prison terms for their involvement.
  • Authorities seized and later returned VND20 billion to Zhang’s family, marking it as non-criminal assets.
