The Royal Thai Army and government have condemned Cambodia after rockets were fired into Thailand, killing a civilian on December 14. Cambodian forces allegedly launched BM-21 rockets targeting the Sao Thong Chai subdistrict in Si Sa Ket province. The attack resulted in the death of 63-year-old Don Patchapan and caused damage to homes and a school.

This incident follows a previous day of cross-border shelling, with the Thai military accusing Cambodia of intentionally targeting civilians. The Thai government views the attack as a violation of human rights and international humanitarian law. Army officials and government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat reported that the rockets struck Ban Nong Mek village, causing significant damage.

Thailand condemns these acts, asserting the attacks were deliberate and unjustified, contrary to Cambodia's claims of accidental fire. The government emphasized the targeted communities' lack of involvement in military operations and deemed the attack unacceptable. The situation has led to heightened tensions between the neighboring countries.

Thai authorities revealed they had been warned of potential rocket attacks and advised locals to seek shelter, yet the assault resulted in tragedy. Meanwhile, thousands of Thai nationals remain stuck on the Cambodian side of the Poipet border due to postponed releases, adding to the strain.

Looking forward, diplomatic discussions are likely as Thailand seeks to prevent further aggression and protect its citizens. Monitoring the Si Sa Ket province remains a priority to ensure safety. The situation continues to unfold, with international bodies possibly becoming involved to mediate and maintain peace, reported The Thaiger.
