Ho Chi Minh City ranked among the world's ten most polluted cities on Saturday, as a thick haze covered the area and air quality became unhealthy. The Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 179 by morning, which indicates a harmful level for the general population. Levels of PM2.5, a fine particulate matter, were nearly four times higher than the World Health Organization's safety guidelines.

The city experienced persistent haze throughout the day, reducing visibility and causing discomfort despite rising temperatures. By evening, the AQI improved to around 80, a moderate level. PM2.5 was identified as the main pollutant, posing risks especially to children, the elderly, and those with existing health issues.

Throughout the day, Ho Chi Minh City consistently ranked among the top ten most polluted major cities worldwide. This coincides with a general pollution crisis in Vietnam, with both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City recording high pollution levels. On Saturday morning, Hanoi was fifth, and HCMC was seventh in the global pollution rankings.

Experts pinpoint traffic, construction, urban expansion, and emissions from residential and industrial activities as key contributors to the worsening air quality. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 particles can lead to serious health issues, including respiratory and cardiovascular problems.

Authorities are advising people to track AQI levels, reduce outdoor activities during peak pollution hours, use masks, and install indoor air purifiers. As Ho Chi Minh City battles repeated pollution spikes, especially in 2025, daily routines and health measures are crucial, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City's AQI reached unhealthy levels on Saturday morning.
  • PM2.5 levels were almost four times higher than WHO guidelines.
  • Authorities recommend monitoring AQI and limiting outdoor exposure.
