A 20-year-old autistic man was killed after falling beneath a municipal refuse lorry and being crushed by its rear wheel in Chanthaburi province. The incident occurred at about 14.30 on Monday, 15 December, causing shock and distress among local residents and refuse collection workers who witnessed the event. Emergency responders confirmed the victim died at the scene from severe head injuries.

Police from Makham station were alerted to the incident involving a reversing municipal rubbish truck at the entrance to Soi Ok Phok 2, Moo 11, Pathawi subdistrict, Makham district. Officers, together with Sawang Katanyu Chanthaburi rescue volunteers, attended the scene to investigate. The victim was identified as Mr Nattaphum, aged 20, described by authorities as a special-needs individual with autism.

The body was found beneath a green six-wheel refuse lorry belonging to the Pathawi municipality, registration from Chanthaburi. Police reported that the rear wheel of the truck had run over the victim’s head with significant force. A pair of flip-flops belonging to the deceased was found beside the vehicle and documented as evidence.

According to the driver, Mr Sommai, aged 40, he had been driving the refuse lorry along Highway 317 outbound from the town. When passing the victim’s home, Mr Nattaphum reportedly ran after the vehicle and jumped onto the rear, something the driver said he was unaware of at the time. He stated that this behaviour was believed to be habitual for the young man.

The incident occurred at the final rubbish collection point near the entrance to the alley where the truck was manoeuvring forwards and then reversing to collect bins. The driver said he heard a rear worker shout that the truck had run over the young man and immediately stopped the vehicle. Upon getting down to check, he found the victim had already died.

A refuse worker stationed at the rear of the truck provided further details, confirming that the victim frequently ran after the rubbish lorry and climbed onto it whenever it passed his home. On this occasion, Mr Nattaphum was holding onto a modified belt handhold at the back of the truck. As the vehicle reversed into the alley, he jumped down but lost his balance, fell beneath the lorry, and under the wheels.

Matichon reported that the worker said he attempted to grab the victim’s hand to pull him clear but was unable to do so in time. Police have taken the driver and all relevant refuse collection staff to Makham police station for further questioning. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances to determine the precise cause.
