Police and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers were called to a village in Phayao province after residents discovered a live hand grenade, prompting an immediate security operation to protect the surrounding community. The incident occurred on Monday, 15 December, when villagers in Ban Sop Sa, Rom Yen subdistrict, Chiang Kham district, reported a suspicious object believed to be an explosive. Authorities confirmed the device was a fully intact M67 fragmentation grenade, capable of detonation, and secured the area before removing it for destruction, preventing injuries or damage.

The alert was received through the 191 emergency radio network, which triggered a rapid response from local police and a specialist EOD unit. Officers cordoned off the vicinity to ensure public safety while specialists examined the object. After confirming it was an M67 grenade in a ready-to-use condition, the team carried out safety procedures and transported the device away from residential areas to minimise risk during disposal.

The grenade was taken to a rubbish pit in Ban Sop Sa, where EOD officers conducted a controlled destruction. The operation was completed without incident and officials confirmed that no people were harmed and no property was damaged. Following the successful disposal, police began initial checks to determine how the military-grade explosive came to be left in the area.

Authorities indicated that investigations are ongoing to establish the origin of the grenade and identify any individuals responsible for abandoning it. While no suspects or motives were initially disclosed, police said enquiries would focus on tracing how such an explosive device entered a civilian setting. The discovery caused understandable alarm among residents, highlighting ongoing concerns about public safety when hazardous materials are found in populated areas.

Police reiterated warnings to the public about the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance or suspicious objects. Residents were reminded not to touch, move, or attempt to inspect any item suspected of being an explosive. Instead, they were urged to report such findings immediately to authorities so trained personnel can handle the situation safely.

Naewna reported that investigators will continue to examine possible links to illegal possession or disposal of explosives in the region. Officials said further updates would be provided if the investigation identifies the source of the grenade or leads to legal action. In the meantime, local authorities are maintaining vigilance and encouraging community cooperation to prevent similar incidents.
