A Boeing 787 Dreamliner landed at Long Thanh International Airport on Dec. 15, marking a significant step in Vietnam's largest aviation project. The aircraft, operated by Vietnam Airlines, undertook a technical inspection flight, focusing on verifying airport systems rather than passenger services. This milestone indicates that Long Thanh Airport is nearing the final stages of preparation.

The Dreamliner operated flight VN5001, departing from Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, stopping at Tan Son Nhat, before heading to Long Thanh. The test focused on evaluating flight-operation infrastructure, including navigation systems and air traffic control. Airports Corporation of Vietnam confirmed that Long Thanh's infrastructure aligns with International Civil Aviation Organization standards.

Upon landing, the aircraft was greeted with a ceremonial water salute, and ground crews tested boarding and deplaning procedures. The operation adhered strictly to safety protocols, with all systems performing reliably, including precision landing capabilities and aeronautical lighting throughout taxiing and apron maneuvers.

The flight returned to Tan Son Nhat at 6 p.m. as VN5002, following successful safety and operational inspections. On Dec. 19, Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, and Bamboo Airways plan additional test flights to further validate the airport's readiness. These flights will proceed upon meeting all operational benchmarks.

Long Thanh Airport's first phase spans 1,810 hectares, designed to accommodate 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually. Construction began in January 2021, with the airport expected to commence commercial operations by mid-2026, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam Airlines conducted a successful technical flight at Long Thanh.
  • Core aviation systems met ICAO standards during the inspection.
  • Additional test flights are scheduled to assess operational readiness.
