Thailand has moved to nominate Chiang Mai's ancient Lanna capital for UNESCO World Heritage status. The nomination emphasizes seven iconic temples and the city’s historical layout. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Suchart Chomklin, along with Minister of Culture Sabina Thaised, announced the decision after a national committee meeting.

Chiang Mai has been on Thailand's tentative World Heritage list since 2015. Officials aim to fast-track the nomination to meet the UNESCO deadline on January 30, 2026. This deadline is crucial, as it marks the final opportunity for sites already on the list to be submitted directly without a preliminary assessment.

A revised nomination dossier, aligning with feedback from the World Heritage Centre, is ready for Cabinet approval. If approved, it will be submitted promptly, avoiding potential delays under new UNESCO rules. The focus of the nomination is on seven temples that reflect the Lanna civilization’s architectural and cultural significance.

These include Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple, and Wat Chedi Luang, which had the largest chedi in the Lanna Kingdom. Other temples highlighted are Wat Phra Singh, Wat Suan Dok, Wat Umong, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and Wat Chet Yot. Additionally, the preserved city layout with its square shape, walls, and moats, forms part of the nomination.

Bowornwet Rungreungkiat, a former Fine Arts Department chief, emphasized the structures’ outstanding universal value (OUV) as per UNESCO’s criteria. The designation aims to preserve Chiang Mai’s Lanna identity and enhance sustainable tourism, mirroring the successes of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya.

Looking ahead, if approved, the submission would position Chiang Mai for enhanced conservation and tourism benefits. Also of note, Chiang Mai is developing rapidly as a major MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism destination in Thailand, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Chiang Mai is being nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, focusing on its temples and historical layout.
  • The nomination must be submitted by January 30, 2026, to meet UNESCO’s final deadline under current rules.
  • If approved, it could boost Chiang Mai’s cultural preservation and tourism similar to Sukhothai and Ayutthaya.
