Hotel bookings in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Trang are poised to grow 20-30% thanks to a rise in visitors from Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. This surge comes as Hat Yai, in Songkhla, recovers from significant flood damage. Full recovery of tourism in Hat Yai is projected within three months, according to the Songkhla Tourism Association.

Hat Yai is a crucial economic and tourism hub, currently undergoing rehabilitation from the recent floods. In response, tourism operators across Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Trang, in collaboration with partners from Malaysia and Singapore, are actively accommodating the increased visitor numbers. Many Malaysian tourists are using these provinces as stopover points before proceeding to other destinations.

The upcoming New Year and Chinese New Year festivals are expected to further boost hotel bookings. According to Jaroon Kaewwajisap, the association's president, foreign bookings in Phatthalung alone are predicted to increase by 20-30%, up from a previous 10-20% of total bookings. The growth trend is anticipated to spill over to the Andaman coast, despite recent challenges.

Government support has been highlighted as a critical factor in sustaining tourism efforts. Specifically, allowing Malaysian tour buses to operate beyond Songkhla for six months could enable larger group bookings, providing a steady revenue stream. This initiative has been long supported by the local tourism associations as a means to boost the economy during downturns.

Looking forward, the region is expected to maintain 60-70% of its tourist base, safeguarding revenue as Hat Yai completes its recovery process. The continued development of transportation links and international partnerships remains vital to bolstering the area's tourism industry, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Hotel bookings in three Thai provinces are set to grow 20-30%.
  • Malaysian, Singaporean, and Indonesian tourists are key contributors to this rise.
  • Government support is essential for sustaining the tourism recovery process.
