A Vietnamese student has been apprehended in Seoul following the death of her newborn, who was abandoned in a paper bag amid freezing temperatures. The infant was discovered near a building close to Dongguk University and rushed to a hospital by emergency services but did not survive. The Seoul Metropolitan Police announced the arrest of two Vietnamese women in their 20s, with one confirmed as the mother.

The incident was reported to the Jungbu Police Precinct on Sunday evening. Authorities suspect the mother gave birth inside a university restroom prior to leaving the newborn outside the Chungmu Haksa dormitory. The outdoor temperature at the time was minus 3 degrees Celsius, posing extreme risk to the newborn’s survival.

Police have detained another Vietnamese student allegedly involved in the abandonment. This individual is accused of assisting the mother and being complicit in the crime. The mother, reportedly in poor health, is currently receiving hospital treatment while investigators await stabilization of her condition to proceed with questioning.

Authorities aim to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the birth and reasons for the abandonment. The investigation will continue as they analyze evidence and statements from the detained individuals. The tragic incident has raised concerns over the safety and support for vulnerable individuals, particularly international students facing difficult situations abroad, reported VN Express.
