A man pretending to be a monk was arrested in Ang Thong on December 18 after police uncovered his lack of monk credentials and attempt to falsify a urine test. The man, identified as 48-year-old Jaran, had been soliciting donations at Rong Thong Shrine Market. Police, alerted by unusual activity, found him in monk robes with donation envelopes, claiming the funds were for a Kanchanaburi monastery.

Upon questioning by Wiset Chai Chan Police Station officers, Jaran failed to provide evidence of his ordination, could not recall his temple, and admitted his robe was wrapped by someone else. He mentioned traveling with three "disciples" who had left the scene. Jaran's inability to chant basic Pali prayers further raised suspicions, and he agitatedly attempted to cheat a drug test by using cold water.

Jaran confessed to consuming methamphetamine, and a urine test confirmed the presence of narcotics. He had collected 25 donation envelopes, totaling 700 baht from individuals who believed they were donating to a legitimate cause. Charged with impersonating a monk and drug use, Jaran was detained for further questioning. Authorities are also searching for his three accomplices who fled before the arrest.

A similar incident occurred in September when police arrested a Buddhist monk in Bang Lamung for hiding methamphetamine in alms bowls. These cases underscore ongoing issues of fraud and drug use within communities.

Experts suggest increasing public awareness and verification processes to prevent such fraudulent activities. The authorities aim to ensure stricter monitoring of monkhood legitimacy and sanction those violating laws to maintain trust in religious practices, reported The Thaiger.
