An investigation is underway as the Department of Education (DepEd) has responded to allegations against a Manila teacher accused of forcing a Grade 7 student to eat a cockroach and threatening the child. This accusation prompted the teacher's arrest and highlights concerns about child safety in schools, sparking public and institutional reactions. The department has promised immediate actions to protect the student involved, offering class adjustments and psychosocial support.

This incident follows a formal complaint by the student's parent to the schools division office in Manila, as well as a report to DepEd’s central office. The case has drawn attention to DepEd's zero-tolerance stance on violence and abuse, as emphasized by media relations officer Dennis Legaspi. The teacher, a 52-year-old man, was arrested by the Manila Police District and released on a bail of P120,000.

The alleged incident occurred on October 15, when the 12-year-old student reportedly witnessed the teacher molesting another female student. Both incidents are being investigated separately by DepEd to ensure all learners involved receive care and protection. DepEd has cited its Child Protection Policy, which strictly prohibits violence, abuse, and exploitation in schools, reported PhilStar.

Key Takeaways

  • The teacher was arrested for allegedly forcing a student to eat a cockroach.
  • DepEd is committed to a zero-tolerance policy against violence in schools.
  • Investigations are ongoing to protect and support all involved students.
