Vietnam's new national plan to enhance foreign-language skills includes a pilot program to introduce Chinese, Japanese, and Korean lessons for preschoolers. This initiative, approved by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long on December 16, aims to boost future workforce competitiveness as part of a broader strategy running from 2025 to 2035. English will continue to be the primary foreign language for young learners, with nearly 57% of the approximately 470,000 preschoolers already receiving English instruction.

This policy is part of Vietnam's foreign-language education strategy, designed to foster a workforce proficient in multiple languages. Currently, general education students have options to study languages such as Chinese, Russian, French, German, Japanese, or Korean, where feasible. The plan encourages integrating language learning with other subjects to bolster practical usage among students.

The government seeks to prepare a generation with formidable language skills to drive innovation, sustainable development, and competitiveness in local and international markets. Key steps include expanding the foreign-language teaching workforce, recruiting foreign teachers, updating curricula, reforming assessments, implementing digital technology, and enhancing international cooperation.

The initiative is following a broader government plan issued in late October, which aims to make English the second language in schools from 2025 to 2035, mandating English instruction from Grade 1 by 2030. The Ministry of Education and Training anticipates that all students will have studied English as a second language by 2035, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam to pilot Chinese, Japanese, and Korean for preschoolers.
  • English remains the primary foreign language for young learners.
  • Strategy aims for workforce competitiveness in domestic and global markets.
