Chiang Mai International Airport has increased security and passenger facilitation measures ahead of the New Year holiday period, as daily passenger numbers are expected to average more than 34,000. The airport anticipates heavier traffic due to consecutive public holidays, seasonal tourism activities and favourable weather conditions. Authorities say the measures aim to ensure safety while reducing congestion during peak travel days.

On 23 December 2025, Mr Karan Thongkuljeeraphat, Director of Chiang Mai International Airport, presided over a ceremonial inspection and deployment of personnel to mark the enhanced operations. The event took place at the Elephant Plaza on the southern side of the international terminal. Senior airport officials, staff and representatives from security and transport agencies attended, demonstrating coordinated readiness for the holiday period.

The airport estimates an average of approximately 203 flights per day during the New Year season, carrying around 34,700 passengers daily. This represents an increase of about 4 per cent compared with the same period last year. On some peak days, passenger numbers may exceed 35,000, according to airport management.

In response to the increase, Chiang Mai International Airport has boosted staffing at key service points, including check-in counters, security screening areas and information desks. Queue management has been prioritised to minimise delays, while cooperation has been strengthened with security agencies such as the 33rd Military Circle, Wing 41 of the Royal Thai Air Force, Phuping Ratchaniwet Police Station, the Tourist Police, Immigration, Customs, airlines and airport concessionaires. These measures are intended to safeguard passengers, staff, and surrounding areas.

Passengers have been advised to arrive at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures. Travellers are also encouraged to check flight information in advance and follow staff instructions closely. The airport recommends using self-service technologies, including automated check-in kiosks, self-service baggage drop and facial recognition systems, to reduce waiting times.

Traffic management plans have also been implemented, with coordination between traffic authorities and public transport operators to ease access to and from the airport. Free parking will be available at the airport’s multi-purpose building sports ground from 28 December 2025 to 4 January 2026. The initiative is being offered as a New Year gift to passengers and members of the public.

Naewn reported that Chiang Mai International Airport has reaffirmed its readiness to handle travel across 34 domestic and international routes. The airport described itself as a key gateway to northern Thailand and an important driver of the regional economy and tourism sector. Officials said monitoring and coordination would continue throughout the festive period to maintain safety and service standards.
