Now 84, I completely stopped caring what people think or say about me in my mid 70s.

I stopped caring about other's opinions in my teens.

And always either too poor, or too practical, to 'keep up with the Jones'. I preferred to retire early, instead of flashing what I don't need.

Retiring early was flash enough, I reckon. Financially, you can stop giving a toss, when you have a wee bit more than enough, needed to put that smile on your face.

Enough means different things for different folks.
