Retrospective: Your ==worst== experience of 2025…?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

I don’t know about yours.

However, my worst experience of 2025 happened just before the close of yesteryear, meaning last year.

It happened like this:

I was minding my own business in my own neighborhood, which is a neighborhood where we seldom see Farang, or tourists even, much less Gigantic Tourists.

And then, just as I had thought I had gotten through 2025, OK, without anything so very terrible…

Along comes running, or jogging, this Giant Farang, with no shirt.

Must have been Six-Six, if he was an inch.

And, so very proud of his physique, seemed he.

His man-breasts were a-jiggling as he jogged.

Yet, most men I know, at least those in shape, with little body fat, don’t jiggle.

At least according to my limited experience.

I immediately averted my eyes.

I walked back through my gate, into my compound.

But then, thinking more clearly…

I almost ran back outside, to chase him, knowing he might appreciate my last bottle of extra-virgin olive oil.

One might reasonably expect that, living as far outside the city and tourist areas as I do, one should be protected from such affront to the senses.  But, alas, no.

And so, this January…

I plan to move another ten klicks further north, as soon as I find my new perfect rental house.

(Anyone know where I can find one?)

Thailand is not like Taiwan, in many ways.

In Taiwan, one could live their entire life without encountering a Farang-Tourist, such as I saw, on the last day of last year.

There is really zero utility in trying to educate these tourists, those who have no clue.

The only logical strategy is to avoid them, or to just continue moving farther away from tourist centers, just as these tourist centers continue to expand.

Still, all things considered, I remain a bit grateful to have been exposed to this affront to mine eyes….because…why?

This is the perfect year-end impetus I require to further encourage me to move farther outside the city… And, sometimes, such priceless encouragement comes at great cost, as I learned yesterday, having endured such barebreasted jiggling.

Some guys drink and get a hangover.

But, just seeing this tourist jogging, shirtless, and with his manbreats jiggling, and so very obviously SATISFIED with their jiggling, that…I expect to have a doozy of a hangover for the first month of 2026.

Sights such as this, one just cannot unsee, I fear.

There is beauty, and then there is beauty.

But, this jiggling guy was not beautiful, at least to me.

My idea of beauty is something like this:

So, anyway:

What has been your worst experience of last year, 2025.

Best regards,

And hoping such things never happen, again, in 2026,

Gamma

Important Note:  Although I did find the sight of this running-man’s breasts slightly titillating, I know in my heart that the locals did not appreciate them fully, as this bare behavior is in direct contrast to accepted social norms in Asia, as I know them.  I have been living in Asia long enough to know, which is to say…about…47.5 years.

We just do not DO things like this here.

Am I right?

Final Observation:  As I turned my back on this jogging tourist, with sweat glistening off his bod, and running down his sides….

I wondered:  Has this tourist never heard of Soi Dogs, traveling in packs, in the ‘burbs of Thailand?  Once those Soi Dogs get a whiff of a sweating Farng, especially if he is running, jogging, and jiggling, they will chase him down, and then…no matter how tall/muscular/strong he might be….He will be toast.

Best Advice:  When traveling to a Foreign Land, one must remain hypervigilant at all times. Do as the locals do, or, at least, try to do as they do, even if one might not be fully capable of doing so.  Make an effort.  How difficult can that be?

Also, take a bath once a day, or maybe two, if you have the time. People here, as is also true of Japan, respect cleanliness.  We are not barbarians, are we?

For example…If you might have a cleaning lady who comes to clean your house. Please be respectful, and take a shower just before she arrives.  And use some nice, sweet-smelling shampoo.  Your cleaning lady will think more highly of you, if you do.

There are just so many things I have learned during my 47.5 years in Asia, and the above few items are just the tip of the iceberg.

I could go on, for pages and pages, telling you the many things I have learned during my days in Asia.

You might think that Asia is just like Epcot Center, Orlando, FLA, but it is not.

He surely isn't a fan of you :)

Answering a question should not be interpreted in that manner. I find honesty is the best policy.

Your whole premise is completely wrong.

I am very happy and content. I also have a sense of humour, something you seem to lack.

All humor is, fundamentally, cultural, although some forms are universal.

Everything cleaned up now?

GF's sister lives in company/Government provided housing and have been told that they're not even going to bother to clean them up, they're going to knock them down & rebuild.

They have another house about 45 minutes away so are not homeless but no compensation for their belongings & because they live in government provided housing they're not able to claim the 9,000THB that the government has been giving out sad

Yes, we're almost straight, though none of the doors will close yet, likewise the kitchen drawers won't go back in yet nor the cabinets close. But at least solid wood survives; the cheapo MDF shoe cabinet dissolved! Replaced most of the trashed electrical goods and the items that floated off or were lost in the mud. House electrics are OK now, breakers and safety-cut replaced and all the ground floor plug sockets. The walls are still a slightly muddy hue, they'll get repainted after the dry season.

The city, after a slow start, is getting back to a form of normality, the rubbish heaps have been cleared, the big stores have all reopened and most of the markets, the restaurants and bars to the east of the city are now all open, but in the city centre and west many remain closed, some so badly trashed they'll not reopen.

One of my wife's friends, who had a house near the R1 canal is living with her sister because only the foundations remain, it's unclear what financial assistance she will get beyond the Bht9,000. We had a big clear out of old clothes that the wife donated to help those that lost everything, and we've done what we can to help friends and neighbours. There's a good sense of community here which helps a lot.

Yep, I'm not funny by your estimation. I'll get over it I think. Happy New Year!

Everyone is funny,

In their own way.

But, very few truly appreciate Gallows Humor, when done right.

My worst experience of 2025?

Being arrested by 5 Lao police officers on Xmas Day and then (after UK Embassy intervention), being deported out of the country on New Year's Eve for an unknown offence...

Apart from that the year was OK :)

Yes, but....

You have already CLEARLY stated that you so much enjoy these challenges.

Or, have you forgotten your previous comment?

Because, I, for one, have NOT forgotten.

You were referencing you ENJOYMENT of the CHALLENGE of using several phones, and several internet-connections, simultaneously....just to teach students in China.

All the while, teaching in the DARK, during daily, multiple, power failures.

You seem to thrive on sticky wickets.

So now, just because you get locked up on Christmas....

You expect us to suddenly feel sorry for you?

This just does not compute....

Wait: Very sorry, because I think it might have been Celsius who told this story. You are from Lao, and Celsius is from Burma..is that correct?

Hope all is well now Simon. Must have been traumatic! Best wishes for 2026. No problems here in Sim Reap, still many thousands visiting Angkor Wat and associated temples. Peace agreement still holding.

I rise to challenges, but being arrested is not one of them... :)

Yes they most definitely do. Happy New Year!

If that was really your worst experience last year, it sounds like you had a much better year than some of us. It is a year I am thrilled to leave behind. And I am not just referring to the master of chaos, who caused a tremendous amount of pain around the planet. Now, he is far more impotent, as many supporters are deserting him and many are standing up to his cruelty, ridiculousness, cowardice, and hate.

There were many other personal garbage events. Look forward to 2026, and hope it is going to be a big improvement for all of us.

Definitely up to 11 with that.......thank **** the FO got onto it.

I shudder at the thought of suffering similar.

Hope you are getting over it, although if you were following up on your previous ideas about living in Laos I imagine you might be feeing quite knocked about.

Best wishes and good luck for the future.

What about mold?

Nothing significant, there are no soft furnishings, all the cushions went upstairs. All the furniture has been cleaned and polished with bees wax. There's some black mold on the rough inside wood of the fitted kitchen units but I want them to dry out before scrubbing the mold patches. The kitchen is concrete and tile with Kitzcho fitted wooden units.

The house is well ventilated and the weather has been dry with a reasonable breeze most days. The walls are fine and the floors are all tiled.

On Dec. 23 fainting (without losing consciousness) standing in my bedroom, landing on my butt, resulting in a compression fracture (according to the x-ray) involving the collision of 2 of my lower vertebrae. (The x-ray was inconclusive whether the fracture was new or just an agravation of an earlier event.) The next 4 days were the worst pain I can remember, & I couldn't even make it to the bathroom at night without my gf (who is big) nearly carrying me, while I screamed. The next steps are complicated, and may take a couple of months or so.

That sounds terrible. Are you older? My Mom just broke her hip which is a nightmare at her age. Best of luck this year.

Interestingly enough, I broke not my neck, but the neck of my femur.

In my view, breaking one's hip, at any age, is not difficult.

Easy as rolling off a log.
