Thailand’s New Year road safety crackdown has recorded nearly 4,000 cases entering the probation system over six days, with drink-driving accounting for the vast majority and Nonthaburi, Bangkok and Samut Prakan topping the provincial rankings. The figures underline the continued scale of alcohol-related offences during the festive travel period and the immediate burden on law enforcement and probation authorities.

The Department of Probation reported that on 4 January 2026, the sixth day of the intensified New Year measures, a total of 813 cases entered the system nationwide. Of these, 774 cases involved driving under the influence of alcohol, representing 95.20%, while 39 cases, or 4.80%, involved driving under the influence of drugs. The data reflects daily enforcement outcomes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

According to Pol Col Piya Raksakul, Director-General of the Department of Probation, cumulative figures from 30 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 reached 3,936 cases. These comprised 3,731 drink-driving cases, equal to 94.79%, four cases of reckless driving at 0.10%, 199 drug-driving cases at 5.06% and two street-racing cases at 0.05%. The statistics provide a consolidated picture of offences handled during the six-day period.

In terms of provincial distribution, Nonthaburi recorded the highest number of drink-driving cases with 341. Bangkok followed with 290 cases, while Samut Prakan ranked third with 233 cases. These three areas remained the top hotspots for alcohol-related driving offences throughout the monitoring period.

The department noted a comparison with the day last year, when 1,542 drink-driving cases were recorded. For this year, 774 cases were reported, marking a decrease of 768 cases. Authorities attribute the reduction to sustained enforcement and public awareness campaigns during the New Year holidays.

Beyond enforcement, the Director-General personally inspected operations at the Bang Pahan rest area on Highway 32 at kilometre marker 42 in Ayutthaya province. The visit aimed to encourage officers and support services assisting motorists returning to Bangkok, while reinforcing road safety measures at key transit points. The Daily News reported that The Department of Probation has instructed offices nationwide to coordinate with relevant agencies and probation volunteers.

Good! I nearly had a head on collision with a drunk Thai driving in my lane once. If the BB kept it up likely the statistics would show what is really going on on a daily basis.

660 a day.. in 70 provinces it are hardly 10 in a province. I think there are many many more cases, and not only in these 7 dangerous days and with Songkran but every day. But with a lack of checking other than tax payment we will never know

This is just too stupid to talk about .

Like Ikke said that's only 10 per province .If they would keep this up and be serious about it 24/7/360 they could easily get more than 50 a day per province any day all year long.

That's how many got caught, I wonder how many didn't get stopped?
