A violent clash between rival student groups led to a shooting at the Nida-Seri Thai Intersection in Bangkok yesterday, injuring two teenagers and a woman. The confrontation unfolded on January 8 at about 5.30pm as gunshots shattered the late afternoon calm amid halted traffic at a red light. Panic ensued among motorists, contributing to a massive traffic jam in the area.

The Bueng Kum district police were prompt to the scene, confirming injuries to three individuals. The victims included two male students from a technology college in Bangkok’s Min Buri district and 42-year-old Rujiraporn, an innocent bystander. 18-year-old Paphangkorn suffered a serious neck injury, while the shattering glass injured 17-year-old Paraphat. Rujiraporn sustained a bullet wound to her right arm. All were swiftly transported to Nopparat Hospital for medical care.

Police reports indicate the injured students were travelling with friends on three motorcycles when rival students on two motorcycles appeared and suddenly started shooting. The attackers quickly fled, leaving chaos in their wake. Rujiraporn was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, seated in a white SUV that was hit by three bullets, one of which penetrated a window and struck her.

Authorities have initiated investigations and questioned the students present at the incident. Authorities are determined to locate the shooters and understand the motivations behind the attack, especially as public concerns over safety are increasing, according to The Thaiger.

This incident is deeply concerning and highlights how quickly public spaces can turn dangerous when conflicts escalate. Beyond the injuries, the wider impact on commuters and bystanders is alarming. Situations like this underline the need for stronger conflict prevention, campus mediation, and visible safety measures to protect ordinary people caught in the middle.
