Mayon Volcano, located in the Philippines, erupted on Thursday, January 8, causing ashfall in several local government units (LGUs). The affected areas include Legazpi City, Ligao City, Guinobatan, Bacacay, Camalig, and Anislag in Daraga, Albay. This activity has prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to maintain Alert Level 3 and reinforce the ban on entering the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to potential eruptions.

PHIVOLCS reported a dome-collapse pyroclastic density current (PDC) at Mayon's summit at 6:51 AM, which released grayish ash clouds reaching up to 1,000 meters high, moving west-northwest. Since January 8 at midnight, 40 PDC events have been recorded, highlighting increased volcanic activity. Safety precautions, such as wearing face masks, were advised by Camalig Albay Mayor Caloy Baldo to protect residents from respiratory irritation caused by the ashfall.

Previously, on January 6, Tabaco City Mayor Rey Bragais issued a directive for preemptive and mandatory evacuations in response to Mayon's activity. This measure aimed to ensure the safety of residents as the volcano's activity intensified. Experts urge caution as the situation remains volatile, with potential further eruptions posing risks to nearby communities.

Looking ahead, PHIVOLCS continues to monitor Mayon's activity closely. Authorities are prepared to implement additional evacuation measures if necessary to safeguard residents. The public is advised to stay updated on official bulletins and adhere to safety protocols to minimize risks associated with the volcanic activity, reported Balita.

Key Takeaways

  • PHIVOLCS maintains Alert Level 3 for Mayon Volcano due to ongoing activity.

  • Ashfall was recorded across multiple LGUs, prompting safety precautions.
