Cambodia will loan 150 ancient bronze Khmer artefacts to China at the end of 2026, in a cultural diplomacy initiative designed to strengthen ties and showcase Khmer heritage to new audiences.

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts confirmed the collaboration with Cambodia Angkor International Cultural Investment and Development, a subsidiary of China’s Overseas Chinese Town group. The artefacts will be displayed across three venues, beginning with the Hubei Museum in Hubei province.

Officials say the project is intended to foster deeper cultural exchange between Cambodia and China, while promoting Khmer art to international visitors. The artefacts, drawn from Cambodia’s rich historical collections, are expected to attract significant attention in the global exhibition circuit.

Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, Phoeurng Sackona, welcomed the initiative, describing it as an “opportunity to promote Cambodian cultural heritage to Chinese people who have not yet visited Cambodia.” She urged organisers to ensure the artefacts are safeguarded and to work closely with Cambodian experts in preparing exhibition content.

Sackona also encouraged the company to expand cooperation by staging cultural programmes in Siem Reap, home to Angkor Wat, and reaffirmed support for broader projects aimed at enhancing cultural exchanges. Among them is the planned Zhou Daguan Museum, which will highlight centuries of Khmer civilisation and its connections with China.

Cambodia Angkor International Cultural Investment has positioned itself at the intersection of traditional culture and tourism, aiming to bring theatrical performances and heritage displays to wider audiences. The loan of artefacts is seen as part of this strategy, linking Cambodia’s cultural identity with China’s vast exhibition networks.

While the Ministry has not yet provided details on the exact timeline for the transfer, the late-2026 showcase is expected to be a centrepiece of Cambodia-China cultural diplomacy. For Phnom Penh, the project underscores a broader push to use heritage as a bridge for international cooperation, while for Beijing it represents another step in deepening cultural ties with Southeast Asia.
