More than 1,200 runners have already signed up for the ninth edition of the Angkor Ultra Trail, which will take place on 24 January in Siem Reap. The event, now firmly established as one of Southeast Asia’s most distinctive endurance races, continues to attract strong international interest despite regional tensions.

Vath Chamroeun, Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, confirmed that 1,229 participants are registered so far. Cambodian athletes make up the largest contingent with around 500 runners, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity at home. French nationals lead foreign registrations with about 400 runners, while Vietnam ranks third, though numbers from there have dipped compared to previous years.

Chamroeun suggested that some Vietnamese athletes may be hesitant due to ongoing border issues between Cambodia and Thailand, which have influenced travel decisions. Even so, he stressed that overall confidence in the event remains high, citing its strong reputation and clear safety assurances for visiting runners.

“The tournament continues to receive strong backing from runners worldwide. This shows the trust they have in the organisers and in Cambodia as a safe and welcoming destination,” he said.

Organisers hope registrations will climb to 1,500 by race day. To boost visibility, French influencers will join the competition, helping to raise the profile of the Angkor Ultra Trail internationally. Chamroeun added that these efforts are also about building momentum for the tenth anniversary in 2027, when organisers aim to welcome as many as 5,000 runners.

This year’s race will feature the same categories as previous editions, ranging from 8km to 100km. Beyond competition, the event is designed to promote tourism in Siem Reap and support charitable initiatives benefiting local communities.

Since its launch in 2016 with just 232 runners, the Angkor Ultra Trail has grown steadily. Last year’s edition drew 1,720 athletes from 50 countries, a 15 per cent increase on 2024. Co-chaired by Edouard George and Jean Claude Le Cornec, and organised in partnership with Phoenix Voyages, the race is widely regarded as a unique experience.

Participants traverse forests, rural landscapes and villages before passing the iconic temples of the Angkor Archaeological Park, offering a rare blend of sport, culture and history.
