Police have arrested three teenagers over a fire that destroyed a mattress shop in Bangkok’s Saimai district, confirming the blaze was caused by fireworks rather than deliberate arson by a homeless person as initially suspected. The incident resulted in extensive damage to three four-storey commercial buildings and significant property losses. No injuries were reported, but the fire caused alarm among local residents and business owners.

The arrests were announced shortly after midnight on 9 January 2026 by police from Saimai Police Station. The suspects are three youths aged 13 and 14, including two 14-year-olds and one 13-year-old of Lao nationality. Police said the children admitted their actions after being questioned in the presence of their parents.

The fire occurred at around 11.40pm on 29 December 2025 at a mattress shop on Soi Watcharapol 18, Khlong Thanon subdistrict, Saimai district, Bangkok. Flames spread rapidly, engulfing three adjoining four-storey commercial shophouses and destroying most of the property inside. Firefighters took time to bring the blaze under control due to the intensity of the fire and the combustible materials inside the shop.

According to investigators, the three youths rode a motorcycle to the area on the night of the incident. After stopping near the shop to urinate, they lit fireworks as a prank. Sparks from the fireworks landed on a sofa under a canvas tent next to the mattress shop, igniting the fire before the teenagers fled the scene on the motorcycle.

Police identified the suspects following an investigation led by Pol Maj Gen Kiatikul Sonthinet, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 2. Senior officers involved included Pol Col Nattapong Kiram, superintendent of Saimai Police Station and several investigative officers. The children were summoned along with their parents for questioning at the station.

Authorities have emphasised that legal procedures involving juveniles will be followed carefully. The suspects have been handed over to investigators at Saimai Police Station to proceed under relevant laws concerning juvenile offenders. Police have also reiterated warnings about the dangers of fireworks, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

Khoasod reported that investigators will complete the case file and coordinate with child protection and legal authorities to determine appropriate measures. Officials said the incident will be used as a case study to raise awareness among parents and young people about fire safety and legal responsibility.
