Police in Bangkok have arrested a 31-year-old man accused of snatching a 2-baht gold necklace from a woman in Bang Bon district, following a two-week investigation. The suspect allegedly used a motorbike to scout for victims over long distances before committing the crime, which left the victim injured and without part of her jewellery.

The arrest was announced on 8 January at 10.00am by Pol Maj Gen Samart Phromchat, Commander of Metropolitan Police Division 9, together with investigators from the division’s crime suppression unit and Bang Bon Police Station. The suspect, identified as Mr Prathan, also known as “Nes”, from Khon Kaen province, was detained at his condominium on Kalapapruek Road in Phasi Charoen district under a warrant issued by the Thonburi Criminal Court on 6 January.

The case dates back to 23 December 2025, at about 2.45pm, when Bang Bon police received a report of a gold necklace snatching along a canal-side wall behind Mor Net Health Centre in Soi Ekachai 132. The victim, Ms Nongnuch, aged 51, said the suspect blocked her path with a black Yamaha NMAX motorbike with gold wheels and no licence plate before grabbing her necklace.

She resisted, managing to pull back part of the chain, but around five centimetres of the necklace broke off and was taken by the suspect, who then fled along Soi Ekachai 132. Police described the suspect as tall and thin, wearing a black T-shirt, grey trousers and a black full-face helmet with a red stripe.

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage along the suspect’s escape route for more than two weeks, tracing his movements and identifying a pattern in which he rode for more than 40 kilometres over about one hour while searching for a target. Evidence gathered from the footage led police to seek an arrest warrant before tracking him to his residence.

During questioning, Mr Prathan reportedly confessed to the crime, saying he discarded his clothes and helmet after the incident and sold the gold fragment at a scrap gold shop near Wongwian Yai. He told police he received 39,000 baht, which he used to repay a friend and cover personal expenses and claimed this was his first offence after observing the victim for some time. Amarin reported that the suspect has been handed over to Bang Bon police investigators to face charges of snatching using a vehicle to facilitate the crime or evade arrest, as legal proceedings continue.
