Air Cambodia Seals Boeing 737 MAX Deal

Air Cambodia has confirmed a landmark purchase of ten Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, a move hailed as a major step in strengthening the country’s aviation sector. The deal, finalised during a visit to Boeing’s Seattle headquarters earlier this month, sets the stage for the first delivery in 2031.

Mao Havannall, Minister in charge of the Secretariat of State for Civil Aviation, led the delegation that concluded the agreement. He emphasised that the new fleet will expand Cambodia’s connectivity for both passengers and cargo, boosting the nation’s reputation across Asia and beyond.

“The deployment of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in Cambodia will contribute to strengthening the aviation sector, which is playing an important role in promoting the economy, tourism, and culture for sustainable development,” Havannall said in a statement.

The order comes as Cambodia’s air travel market continues to grow at an average rate of 14 per cent annually, driven by rising tourism and expanding international links. Officials believe the new aircraft will help meet demand while aligning with the country’s investment in modern airport infrastructure.

During their visit to Boeing’s facilities, Cambodian officials toured production lines and studied the company’s safety and quality assurance systems. Discussions also covered technical and operational aspects of the 737 MAX, including maintenance support and entry-into-service requirements.

The State Secretariat of Civil Aviation described the deal as a significant step in deepening cooperation with Boeing, ensuring future operations comply with international safety and airworthiness standards.

The agreement also carries diplomatic weight. In Phnom Penh last week, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn met with Michael George DeSombre, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific, who welcomed the purchase as a sign of growing economic ties between Cambodia and the United States.

For Air Cambodia, the deal represents a long-term investment in modernising its fleet and positioning itself as a competitive player in the region’s aviation market. With deliveries scheduled from 2031, the airline is preparing for a new era of connectivity that could reshape Cambodia’s role in regional air travel.
