Angkor Silk Farm Showcases Khmer Craft to Visitors

In Siem Reap province, the Angkor Silk Farm is opening its doors to visitors eager to discover Cambodia’s centuries‑old silk traditions. Operated by Artisans Angkor, the farm offers a free experience where guests can follow the entire process of silk production, from mulberry cultivation to weaving, all carried out on site.

Located in Proyut village, Puok district, the farm employs 191 workers, most of them women, who preserve techniques passed down through generations. Deputy Head of Silk Production Pech Sopheap explained that the farm produces clothing, bags, krama scarves and a variety of handicrafts, with items sold in Artisans Angkor shops in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, as well as at the country’s international airports.

A highlight for visitors is the silkworm‑rearing process, which takes 47 days before threads can be extracted. The silk is then divided into coarser fibres for everyday garments and fine “gold silk” threads used to create phamuong fabric and krama. Producing a single finished item takes more than two months, underscoring the care and patience required to maintain quality.

Sopheap noted that while foreign tourists have traditionally made up the majority of visitors, more Cambodians are now coming to the farm and purchasing silk souvenirs. She emphasised the durability and brightness of Khmer silk, with textiles such as phamuong and hol able to withstand contact with water.

Established in 1992, the Angkor Silk Farm continues to serve as both a production centre and a living museum of Khmer craftsmanship. Just 13 kilometres from Siem Reap town, it invites locals and international guests alike to support Cambodian‑made products and witness a cultural tradition that remains vibrant today.
