Bangkok was named the third best city to visit globally in The New York Times’ "52 Places to Go in 2026" list, announced on January 16. This recognition highlights Bangkok's strides in urban development, emphasizing its green spaces, vibrant art scene, and innovative public transport systems. The ranking is seen as a significant accolade for the city, reflecting efforts to enhance quality of life and promote sustainability.

The city's transformation has been marked by several key initiatives. One notable achievement is the link between Lumphini and Benjakitti parks through a 20-acre green corridor. This includes an elevated walkway that offers views of lotus ponds and mangrove forests, redefining Bangkok’s image from a concrete jungle to a more green, livable city. Another highlight is the enhancement of Bangkok’s cultural scene, exemplified by Dib Bangkok, a contemporary arts space featuring works from prominent artists like Lee Bul and Montien Boonma.

Bangkok's progress in smart infrastructure also contributed significantly to its ranking. The New York Times praised the city's AI-managed traffic system, the introduction of air-conditioned electric buses, and improved safety standards for motorcycle taxis. These developments aim to modernize mobility and improve the overall experience for both residents and visitors, aligning with the city's forward-looking infrastructure goals.

City spokesperson Aekvarunyoo Amrapala expressed pride in the international recognition, viewing it as affirmation of Bangkok's successful blend of vibrant chaos with sustainable development. He emphasized that such accolades motivate continued efforts to enhance the city's livability, focusing on safety and greenery. These developments are expected to position Bangkok as a leading example of urban modernization and sustainability in the years to come.

As next steps, Bangkok plans to further its initiatives in sustainable urban planning and cultural enhancements, driving its evolution into a model city that balances vibrancy with sustainable infrastructure. More projects and improvements are anticipated to maintain and elevate the city’s standing on the global stage, appealing to both residents and international visitors, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bangkok was named the third best city to visit in a global ranking by The New York Times.

  • The recognition focuses on Bangkok's green spaces, cultural scene, and public transport innovations.

But no mention at all about the air pollution, the noise and the overcrowded public transport....Only positive things will bring a better place the reality is a few places lower maybe

Green Spaces? Innovative transport? Really? Is this confusion, maybe there is a second city named Bangkok?

Relax. The list is whimsical. Look at the other names. No.1 was "Revolutionary Anerica" 😄 15. Penang. Like, why? 30. Portland, Oregon Again, why? For the druggies and mentally ill vagrants?

Looks to me like some Gen Z people got together, did some drugs, and started scrolling through the map application and Google explore and came up with cool sounding places, well cool if you are stoned. Penang, is funny when stoned I guess.

I'm a Portland, Oregon native and it was a great town up til around 15 yrs ago. Now live in Bangkok and Jomtien.
