The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has announced a program offering free medical examinations and courier services for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) renewing their driver’s licenses. This initiative, led by LTO chief Markus Lacanilao, aims to reduce costs and ease the renewal process for OFWs during caravans organized by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). The program is set to impact OFWs by eliminating fees that previously amounted to up to P6,000.

Before this initiative, the costs associated with medical examinations and courier services posed financial burdens on OFWs. The new directive seeks to alleviate these costs and demonstrate the government's appreciation for the sacrifices made by Filipino workers abroad. According to Lacanilao, "Our OFWs continue to sacrifice by working far from their families. This program is a way for the government to show that they are valued."

This program has received positive responses as it notably decreases the financial strain on OFWs while emphasizing their importance to the Philippine economy. Experts see it as a timely move to bolster the welfare of migrant workers, reflecting broader government efforts to support Filipinos overseas. As more caravans are organized, the potential reach and impact of this program are expected to grow.

Looking forward, collaboration between the LTO, OWWA, and DMW will be crucial in maximizing the initiative's success. Continuous assessment and potential expansion of the program may be explored to further assist OFWs. As the rollout continues, further details and outcomes will be monitored to ensure the program meets its objectives efficiently, reported Philstar.
