In Bangkok, police officers from Prawet Police Station were taken aback when they stopped a shirtless man, who appeared to be homeless during a routine patrol, only to find he had a police ID badge indicating the rank of police captain. This event occurred on January 20 in a community area along the motorway frontage road in Prawet district. The man's appearance and ID claim initially led officers to believe he was an undercover cop.

Initially, the man claimed he was on a secret mission to gather intelligence in the area, which officers posted humorously about on Facebook, uncertain whether he was a committed officer in disguise or someone disturbed. The story quickly gained attention on Thai social media, intriguing many with its unexpected twist. However, the reality emerged when TV presenter Sorayuth Suthassanachinda revealed on January 21 that the man was actually homeless.

According to Pol. Col. Tossaphol Amphaipipatkul, superintendent of Prawet Police Station, the man was not affiliated with the police. The ID card in question was likely a misplaced badge from a Metropolitan Police Bureau officer, found by the man. Police have since recorded the man’s details and are attempting to trace any family connections.

This incident echoes a previous case last May where another homeless individual in Bangkok puzzled motorists by performing martial arts-like moves on a busy road while holding nothing more menacing than an umbrella. These occurrences highlight the challenges police face in distinguishing between innocuous behavior and potential threats, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A man claiming to be an undercover officer was found to be homeless.

  • His possession of a police ID card baffled officers during a routine patrol.

  • Social media reactions ranged from amusement to concern over the mistaken identity.
