Trump threatens Canada with 100% tariffs

Featured Replies

President Donald Trump has unleashed a storm by threatening a colossal 100% tariff on all Canadian goods if they buddy up with China. The bombshell dropped as Trump took to Truth Social, sending shockwaves from Ottawa to Beijing.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney recently struck a "strategic partnership" with China, agreeing to lower tariffs. Initially, Trump gave it a thumbs up, calling it "a good thing". But now, he's singing a different tune! Last week’s tension soared when Carney fired shots at the US-led world order at Davos.

In a fiery rebuttal, Trump claimed Canada survives solely due to the US. To turn up the heat, he yanked an invite for Canada to join his Board of Peace—no love lost there!

Diplomatic daggers are out as Trump's message railed against any possible Canada-China pact. "Drop Off Port" for Chinese goods? Trump won’t have it!

However, Canada isn’t backing down. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc dismissed any rumors of a China deal, focusing on global partnerships instead. He claims they’ve only resolved some tariff issues—nothing more, nothing less.

The China-Canada agreement, achieved mere days ago, promises to slash levies on Canadian canola oil from 85% to a mere 15%. Meanwhile, Canada will reduce taxes on Chinese EVs to 6.1%, paving the way for smoother trade waters with Beijing. This breakthrough aims to diversify Canadian trade, amidst Trump’s fluctuating tariffs.

Carney calls it setting up for a "new world order". What's next in this trade showdown? With Canada's moves raising eyebrows, keep watching as tensions simmer!

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump’s tariff threat shocks Canada-China relations.

  • Carney challenges US dominance at Davos, sparking Trump’s ire.

  • Canada-China deal slashes key tariffs, shaking up global trade.

Trump's 100% tariff threat seems less like a trade policy and more like a declaration of economic war on Canada for engaging with China.

If Trump wants to contain China's influence, then alienating and crippling your closest ally is a funny way of going about it.

Canada's Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc claims "...they’ve only resolved some tariff issues—nothing more, nothing less..."! Perhaps, it might have been better received had he said that they reached a "framework of a deal"?

With Trump's threat of 100% tariff, is it any wonder that Canada and others are now looking into economic partnerships that exclude the US, ultimately accelerating Carney's 'new world order'.

Already in China, Trump is known as Chuan Jianguo, meaning "nation-builder", a mocking title that suggests his foreign and domestic policies are driving countries away from Washington and pushing them closer to China.

Hopefully, Canada doesn't back down. They need to stand up to the bully. Europe went the sucking-up route and look what that got them.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Trump TACOs yet again.

He will Taco for sure. The leading export from Canada to US are crude oil and vehicle parts and both are sensitive to the affordability dilemma he is facing. Trump typical just react. He has no brain cell to fully comprehend the consequences. Carney is outsmarting him in every ways. Trump is a midget compare to Carney.

Trump did say that 'tariffs' was his favourite word so that's one thing that he didn't lie about.

Trumps a moron. He thinks tariffs are the way to bully people to do what he wants. He needs to realize he can only bully Americans! The rest o& the world is to busy laughing at his sh8t show!

Is anybody else finding these tariff threats incredibly boring?Trump is such a tired, broken down ,one trick pony and he just doesn't seem to have the ability to improvise nor to change his game. One would think that by now he has conducted enough sabotage of the American economy, the job market ,and consumer confidence in the US, but no it doesn't seem to be enough for him, and the destruction just continues unabated.

My guess is that he wakes up every morning with such an incredible state of misery, bitterness, hatred and has to contend with that toxic cauldron that is normally referred to as a mind, and he just feels the need to lash out. He is such an incredibly sad specimen of a human being and such an incredibly pathetic man.

Canada and China are not negotiating a 'free' trade pact. It was a fairly limited agreement to let in some of China's EVs to the Canadian market (solely the Canadian market). In return, China agreed in principle to significantly drop its tarrifs on Canadian Canola and seafoods. Pretty narrow. Trump initially said it was a 'good thing'.
