Cambodia has registered more than 9,000 electric cars as of 2025, marking a significant step in the country’s push towards greener transport. According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the tally includes 9,065 electric cars, alongside 3,203 electric motorcycles and 700 electric three‑wheelers.

China’s BYD, Japan’s Toyota, and America’s Tesla are currently the most popular brands in the kingdom, reflecting the global nature of the EV market. Officials say the government aims to increase the number of electric cars to 30,000 by 2030, a target seen as central to reducing carbon emissions and cutting reliance on petrol.

Phan Rim, spokesperson for the ministry, stressed the benefits of EV adoption: lower fuel costs and zero tailpipe emissions. “EVs have been gaining popularity in Cambodia, and using them has significantly contributed to reducing the impact of carbon dioxide emitted from petrol‑powered vehicles,” he said.

Analysts note that the trend goes beyond consumer choice. Thong Mengdavid of the China‑ASEAN Studies Center at the Cambodia University of Technology and Science pointed out that Chinese brands such as BYD and GAC are particularly strong in the market. He added that expanded charging infrastructure and ambitious electrification goals are laying the groundwork for sustained growth.

The rise of EVs in Cambodia mirrors broader regional shifts, with Southeast Asian nations increasingly embracing electric mobility as part of their climate strategies. For Cambodia, the momentum suggests not only a cleaner future but also new opportunities for investment and innovation in transport and energy.

With the government’s 2030 target in sight, the coming years will be crucial in determining whether Cambodia can turn early enthusiasm into lasting transformation.
